MOSONI-DANUBE SHIP LOCK AND CONTROL BUILDING
The Mosoni-Danube Flood Gate Control Building stands at the eastern edge of Szigetköz, Hungary, near Vének, where the Mosoni-Danube meets the Danube at its 1794 km mark—midway along the North Sea–Black Sea waterway. Originally conceived as a purely engineering structure on Torda Island, opposite the Gönyű harbour, its goal was to restore Győr's internal water levels and navigability. After decades of delay, the project's architectural and landscape design was revisited, allowing the dam, ship lock, fish ladder, operational bridge, and Control Building to form a cohesive, integrated unit within the landscape.
The building's flowing, water-inspired form echoes the river's movement, while its interior spaces intertwine functionally: an open, glazed reception area, closed service and control wings, and an upper-level cantilevered control room overlooking the ship lock. A roof terrace tops the entrance, and rainwater collection, soil-based systems, and photovoltaics make the facility energetically self-sustaining. Beyond flood control, the site addresses water conservation amid worsening droughts, supporting navigation, tourism, water sports, and cycling, while serving as an education and visitor center for the region.
