-a field for everyone-
Cassine is a village in Guinea‑Bissau, close to the equator. It is difficult to reach from the capital; its roads become impassable during certain seasons, and the population lives from agriculture. The village’s most notable institution is a foundation‑run school, directed by a Brazilian monk. It is the only educational facility in the region, and its buildings were constructed by Hungarian volunteers using local materials and simple techniques for the children.
Today, 800 children study at the school, which offers many of them a rare opportunity for social advancement. The school has no covered sports hall, and during the rainy season this severely limits the possibilities of education. The volunteers have therefore decided to build a sports hall, a structure whose every element must be adapted to local climatic conditions, available building materials, and feasible construction technologies.
The steel structure of the building is manufactured in Europe and shipped to the capital in a sea container. For the school, the sports hall represents a major opportunity, but it will also become an important community hub for the surrounding villages, supporting shared sporting events, strengthening young people’s motivation, and fostering social cohesion.
