SIÓFOK SHIP LOCK AND CONTROL BUILDING
The Siófok Water Lock Reconstruction Project revitalizes the vital infrastructure of Lake Balaton, the "Hungarian sea." Historically a closed industrial zone, the island between the ship and water-level locks has been transformed into a vibrant, multi-functional public space. The redesign serves dual strategic purposes: modernizing water level control to combat climate change and reopening boat traffic to the Danube River. Guided by the inclusive principle "Let it be for everyone," the project prioritizes pedestrian and bicycle access amidst sustainable landscaping featuring native flora. A zero-energy control building powered by geothermal and solar energy sits at the site's core, offering a public rooftop viewing platform. Above-ground concrete structures mimic historic sailing cruisers, beautifully blending industrial heritage with modern design. The surrounding interactive park incorporates recycled materials into benches and art installations, and features a playable, topographic model of the lake, ensuring this critical engineering hub is now a welcoming, educational destination for the entire community.
