The M4 Szent Gellért Tér station was built on Műegyetem rakpart, commissioned by BKV Rt.'s DBR Metro Project Directorate, designed by sporaarchitects (Dékány Tibor, Finta Sándor, Hatvani Ádám, Vadász Orsolya), covering approximately 7,100 m² at a construction cost of around 20 million euros.

The proximity of the Danube and the constrained building site called for a complex station structure: it consists of a slotted box structure and tunnel sections excavated beneath the existing building using the New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM), into which a tunnel boring machine (TBM) is later driven. A multi-level reinforced concrete beam grid holds the box structure together, absorbing the growing earth pressure like a skeletal framework and defining the box's architecture. The curved-cross-section tunnel walls and columns are clad in unique, artist-designed ceramics, distant relatives of the nearby Gellért Hotel's Zsolnay ceramics.

The construction technology produced large interior spaces, whose scale can be compared to the streets of Pest's eclectic urban fabric. Lighting design forms an integral part of the architectural concept, since surface-level constraints mean natural light cannot reach the station.
